Perry has the father of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. Her parents, however, did not permit her to perform until she was an adult, for fear of the impact stress might be able to have on their daughter. Perry says she didn't want to perform in high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry began her career in New York after graduation, landing minor roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry go back to California and pursue a career as a stage actress. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC film The Family, in 2016. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal that starred her dad. She also played her younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, which is a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The role was given by audition even though she was a cousin with the role.
