At age 27, he entered the National Theatre School of Denmark from which he graduated in 1995. In addition to his appearance in the drama series aired internationally under the name The Killing, he subsequently played in two other internationally popular Danish drama series, Those Who Kill and Borgen III. He also played a major role in the BBC drama Sherlock in which he played the blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. In the American TV show House of Cards, he was the role of the president of Russia. In 2018, he won an International Emmy Award for his performance as the president in Russia in the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. It was shown in the UK in the year 2019. According to Mikkelsen's statement, he learned English from his brother listening to Monty Python recordings and watching the comedy sketches.
